Domain Connect Explained — For Grandma¶
Part of the Domain Connect Storytelling collection · Explainers index
You know how when you move to a new house, you have to call the phone company and give them your new address, so they can update the directory and people can find you?
A domain name is a bit like your listing in that directory — except instead of your phone number, it tells people's computers where to find your website or where to send your email.
When you sign up for a new service — let's say a website builder, or an email service — they need to update that directory so everything points to them. The problem is, updating the directory is complicated. You have to log in, find the right section, enter a bunch of technical codes, and get every detail exactly right. Half of people who try it give up.
Domain Connect is like having the service company call the phone company directly and say: "We need to update the listing for this customer. Can we do that?" The phone company then calls you and says: "This company wants to update your listing. Is that all right with you?" You say yes, and it's done.
You don't have to understand the technical codes. You don't have to find the right form. You just say yes to something you actually understand — who is asking, and what they want to change.
