Domain Connect Explained — For a Casual User

Part of the Domain Connect Storytelling collection · Explainers index

You know how when you get a new phone, you can pair it with your Bluetooth speaker in a few seconds? You press a button, both devices recognize each other, and it just works. You don't have to configure network settings or type in codes.

Connecting a domain to a website or email service used to be the opposite of that experience. You registered your domain at one company, your website or email is hosted by a different company, and to connect them you had to go into a technical settings panel and manually enter a bunch of cryptic values — things like "MX records" and "CNAME entries" and "TTL values" — that require background knowledge most people don't have.

About half of people who try it give up before finishing.

Domain Connect makes it work like the Bluetooth speaker. When you sign up for a service that supports it and enter your domain, a button appears: "Connect automatically." You click it. Your domain registrar's site opens and asks: "This service wants to make some changes to your domain's settings. Allow it?" You click yes.

That's it. The two systems — your domain registrar and the service you're connecting — sort out the technical details between themselves. You just give permission. No codes, no forms, no manual entry.
