Domain Connect Explained — For a Blogger

Part of the Domain Connect Storytelling collection · Explainers index

If you've ever tried to connect a custom domain to your blog, you know the drill. You buy the domain, you go to your blogging platform, and then it sends you off to your registrar's DNS settings with a list of things to copy in. You're staring at fields labeled "Host," "Points to," and "TTL," wondering what any of it means. You type something in. Nothing works. You Google it. You find a help article that shows screenshots that don't match what you're seeing. You try again. You wait twenty minutes. Still nothing.

Half of bloggers who attempt this fail and give up.

Domain Connect fixes this. When a blogging platform supports it and your domain registrar supports it, connecting your domain looks like this:

  1. You type your domain into the blogging platform.
  2. A button appears: "Connect automatically."
  3. You click it. You're taken to your registrar's site — where you're already logged in.
  4. A box says: "[Platform] wants to connect [yourdomain.com]. This will add 2 DNS records. Allow?"
  5. You click Allow.

Done. Your custom domain is live, usually within a few minutes.

No copying cryptic codes. No help articles. No trial and error. The two companies — your blogging platform and your domain registrar — figured it out between themselves. You just gave permission.
